Package managers - NxtUpdate

NxtUpdate detects package managers that are already installed. Missing managers are ignored.

Source	Command	Notes
Homebrew	`brew`	Updates formulae and casks.
Node.js	`npm`, `pnpm`, `yarn`, `bun`	Uses the active package manager.
Python	`pip3`, `pip`	Skips virtual environments and externally managed environments.
Rust	`cargo`	Requires `cargo-install-update`.
macOS	`softwareupdate`	Uses sudo unless `--no-sudo` is set.

Cargo support#

Cargo cannot list outdated installed binaries by itself. Install cargo-install-update once:

cargo install cargo-install-update

Python environments#

NxtUpdate avoids modifying externally managed Python installations. If a pip environment cannot be updated safely, it is shown as skipped instead of using --break-system-packages.

macOS updates#

System updates use the built-in softwareupdate command and may ask for your administrator password. Use --no-sudo to leave them out of a TUI or CLI update run.
